BRIEF

The project abstracts poles, insulators and tensioned lines into architectural elements that organise circulation and display. A restrained palette of concrete, galvanised metal and diffused light establishes a controlled, neutral field.

Set slightly back from the street edge, the store creates an informal foyer that buffers the harsh southern sun typical of Ahmedabad.

This recessed threshold not only reduces heat gain but also choreographs entry, revealing the interior gradually as the pole installation unfolds in layers rather than all at once.

Held Tension transforms electrical infrastructure into a streetwear retail interior in Ahmedabad
Indian studio Metanoia Designs has completed Held Tension, a streetwear store in Ahmedabad that reinterprets the visual language of electrical networks as a spatial system.

“The idea was to treat retail as a system rather than a backdrop,” said the studio. “We looked at infrastructure not as an aesthetic reference, but as a logic of connection and distribution.”

Within this framework, linear elements introduce a sense of latent energy, giving the space a quality that feels both static and charged. The central installation operates as both structure and narrative, positioning the merchandise within a larger network of connections.

At the rear, a stepped volume anchors the composition and creates a moment of pause within an otherwise linear progression. Behind this, two trial rooms are enclosed in recycled corrugated metal sheets, salvaged, restored and refinished in a metallic coating, allowing them to merge seamlessly with the overall material language while subtly referencing the industrial origins of the project.

“Instead of amplifying visual noise, we chose to hold tension within the space, allowing identity to emerge through structure, proportion and restraint.”
